Hello! It’s been a long three weeks. While we’ve been working harder than ever on Cave Story I’ve had the pleasure of taking care of a new addition, our first baby.
We haven’t stopped working one bit on Cave Story. Amaya-san and I literally text-message or e-mail each other multiple times a day to decide important things. Is it Koron or is it Colon? Is it Chaco or is it Chako?
Tiffany what are you up to?
“On the programming front I have more recently spent time tweaking the error handling for the Wii as well as putting the final touches on lotcheck. We are currently in the process of being approved for Nintendo’s Wi-Fi access for the DLC back end stuff. ”
Let’s see, most of the hard stuff is done:
- Remix/original artwork
- Remix/original audio
- Three save files are working great
- Game is running beautifully at 60fps which was the originally intended speed!
We still have bugs that need to be fixed. Probably about two dozen or so minor little ones that we need to address.
By the way, did anyone notice that IGN awarded Cave Story something very special, best WiiWare game of E3:
If you don’t know Cave Story yet, get to know it. This cult classic retro game was originally released on PC, and after huge support it’s now on its way to WiiWare in a new slightly upgraded affair. Blending the best elements from titles like Super Metroid and Mega Man, Cave Story is an epic title as far as downloads go. Cave Story may have had some decent competition this year, but only a few select WiiWare games have the power to make us cash in a sick day to play, and Cave Story is just that fun.

It’s good to hear from you guys again. I hope cave story wii isn’t really delayed until Q4 2009, that would be a huge bummer.
Also two things, can we know what glitches there are and can we get an album of the remixes on iTunes?

I would second a request for the soundtrack to be made available sometime after the game is released, preferably for free and a nice quality like World of Goo’s! That sure would be lovely.
Nice to see you’re aiming to perfect the translation as well. May I make a small request for all instances of the Doctor’s name to be capitalised? It’s a totally minor thing really but in the Aeon translation there were a couple of instances of it varying between doctor and Doctor, it was a little distracting.
The only other thing that stood out to me was the use of the word “Earth” during one of the endings. It is really the Earth or is the world nameless according to Pixel (in which case “surface” would be better, as used in the rest of the game)? I’m sure you guys have looked into this though!
Anyway, take all the time you need to fix up those bugs! That sort of thing can be a real pain but it’s very important. Congrats on that award, too!

Glad you guys are still at it!
So this will be the definitive Cave Story version thus far, eh? I always wondered what it’ll be like at a full 60 FPS.
Good luck with stomping out the last few bugs! And here’s to hoping that cavestory.com will actually get a much-needed update sooner or later…

Nice to get another update, and a big one. I am looking forward to the game, hopefully it will come out before I have to go back to school.
Also, I’d like to see some of the remixes available for download.

about 60fps:
this means its running on a 60Hz monitor/tv. unfortunately, im still stuck with the old 50Hz PAL standard. outdated and crappy. the tv ’supports’ 60Hz but stretches the video so that it doesnt fit on the screen anymore… especially noticeable in games with huds. just lovely when they are cut off and numbers are unreadable (eg metroid, zelda).
aaaanyway, will there be proper 50Hz support. i dont want to to play a stretched cutoff game nor a slowed down audio garbled mess
and: keep up the good work
