Wasn’t it supposed to be “weed town”? The tilesets for that stage were originally named “weed.”
In Japan, weeds are used to describe grass as well. I guess Aeon Genesis chose something that would make more sense to the English audience.
…of course, Pixel has the final say, since he created the game!

P.S. Thanks to the guys in the forums for clearing this one up for me!

I think it’s a good thing that they’re taking longer, means the game will be of higher quality, instead of rushed crap.
And it’s AMAYA’S game, not AG’s, so they’ll change it if they want.

C.L. No, you’re confused. He never specified that they’d be using that translation, just that they were talking with one another.

Seriously, calm down. Would you rather they crapped out a shitty upgrade, got Cave Story hated by everyone, and thus start the games sink into mediocrity, or that they do the game justice?

Although, I also liked Grass Town. It was whimsical and fun, and fits the game better than Bushlands.

  26. Yal Says:

Finally, I’ve gotten myself an account. Time to comment on my favourite non-RPG’s progress, no?

I think “Bushlands” suits the area better, since a town with only two residents is… well… more like a village. Still, “Grasstown” had a nice ring to it. So did “Weedtown”, but since that’d only net rastafari jokes, I’m glad it was translated differently. And the surprise when I noticed there were an “Egg Corridor” area the first time… I miss that feeling. By the way… there aren’t any bushes in Grasstown, right? This is confusing me.

I also want to say that even though the Sue image on top of the new blog stylesheet (or what the omnicovering border now is named) is very japanesely styled, I find it somewhat ugly.

The amount of updates rapidly stresses me out, it’s almost impossible to comment at everything in the same speed you post things, Team Nicalis.

The Wonderwitch game sort of reminds me of “Marchen Adventure Cotton 100%”, a pretty fun SNES game. I think it’s easier to find in Japan than Europe, but over here in west there’s always emulators for the shady individuals. Anyways, scrolling shooters without spaceships are always nice.

Keep up the good work, Nicalis! I don’t have a Wii, but I think I might be able of speaking one of my friends into buying it. Instead of saving up Wii Points, I save up stat points to put on Charisma the next time I level up. ^_^

Cave Story is one of the games I’ve played the most (so many times in a row that I’ve gotten myself sick of it temporarily, to be honest.), and it has given me a lot of inspiration. The new music is good, but when it instrument changes it gets a bit unfitting to the level.

I’m okay with the Grasstown rename, but I would like to point out that although bushlands is the proper name, the english-speaking players are used to Grasstown. And to those who say ‘two residents doesn’t make a town’, remember there’s a bunch of buildings near the end, isn’t there.

  29. Hamm Says:

Huge improvement in the sound quality guys. Seriously impressed in how much it changed in so short a time. Interesting take on the music. It started out and I wasn’t really into it, but once the instruments changed I really liked it a lot. The clinging sound of the exp triangles still seems too loud to me, but perhaps it is simply from how it is recorded. Hearts have sound effects now, I don’t remember them having any in the last game. Gameplay looks smooth. Graphics are generally beautiful, but the red lines above and below the “MAX” for weapon level seem to really stand out garishly. I think they could be done away with completely and it would be a good improvement. Not sure how I feel about Grasstown being renamed or properly named to Bushlands…it really changes the feel of the area and I can picture the nerd rage rising already because of it. I also don’t remember any bushes in the area…but there’s a ton of grass. Grasstown provides a happy feeling from the name. Bushlands provides a thought of bush people, perhaps a dry, arid environment. It just doesn’t seem to fit. Sometimes direct translations aren’t as effective as a translation that keeps the idea intact, but provides a more meaningful definition in the target language.

  30. Deceased Crab Says:

It’s starting to look better, and sound a little bit better (the music is still off). But, being at least 4 years after Cave Story was originally translated, played, and beaten by most people, I’m starting to have some patience problems waiting for the Wii release. I was originally planning on grabbing this at release, but now I think I’ll just wait for reviews and recommendations to trickle in from other players.

We haven’t seen anything really new to the game in these trailers, just graphical upgrades (and musical downgrades) of the areas in the original game. We don’t have any certainty of what the downloaded content will be, and it will probably cost additional Wii points when it is released.

However, I’m really looking forward to Night Game, so please expedite its release.

or -: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  31. sirjazzhands Says:

Whoa whoa whoa. I had to finally stop lurking and register just to reply to this. “Musical downgrades”? Downgrades, what are you talking about? The music is sounding even better than before. Not to mention, er, what is everyone talking about when they’re saying the EXP triangles are too loud? They sound.. exactly the same to me.

Why are you wanting something entirely new to be in the game? Sure, it would be nice (I read that there will be new levels that will be similar to Metal Slug, all about just shooting stuff up), but even if there were no new levels, isn’t it just nice that since the game is coming to WiiWare, it now has the possibility of reaching a larger audience?

Either way your logic of not getting the game at release as you had planned just because it’s taking a while is really.. immature, I think, but whatever you’d like to do.

  32. Panda-Fire Says:

    sirjazzhands:
By downgrades, they’re talking about them using MIDI software. To be honest, I don’t find midi that bad. ZUN who made Touhou used a lot of MIDI, and his music was treated as amazing. Just because it’s MIDI doesn’t mean it has to suck. Music can be made with anything. Besides, there’s supposed to be a system to use the old music, in case you don’t like the new music. Also, the EXP triangles are too loud, because I set the volume low enough where only the triangles are present, meaning they’re the loudest thing. It isn’t supposed to be that way… or is it?

Anyways, the thing I mentioned before about Bushlands. Not that I hate the name, but there’s going to have to be too much community changes. I’m pretty sure someone without previous knowledge of the game is going to get it off wiiware, get stuck around that part, so he looks up a guide. Happens to find an old cave story guide first, and does Ctrl+F Bushlands(As that will be the only name he knows) Just to find nothing. There’s also some great videos out there you can get to by just searching Grasstown on Youtube. I’d prefer if they get the attention of the new fans aswell as the old fans. (In other words, I’d prefer if the name was universal.) I also don’t want this to be like Street Fighter where everyone gets the names confused due to translation problems of a previous game, so everyone says everyone’s name differently.

As i watched it a second time i saw more although its probably just intentional:
    1. You cant hear quotes jumping or landing sounds
    2. The sound of the music either covers up the sounds of the guns or they are just not in there.
    3. The yellow triangles (exp) bounce and make a really loud tink noise.
these are differences from the original but im sure the new will be quite payable.

  37. tiffany Says:

Hey there. :) Just stopping in to clarify that we haven’t changed the sound data at all for the sound effects, only the music.

I think what you are hearing is just the audio volume being clipped due to the video encoder, that is not the way it sounds in the game. However, we do think that some of the sounds are a little too loud and are tuning their volumes, we want to make sure everything is exactly as it should be.

  45. Deceased Crab Says:

Well, I don’t see the point in buying this anymore, and I hope this is only temporary. I know development on this has been active for about a year now. Considering the fact that the game was completed over 4 years ago, and the port was announced a year ago, it’s surprising that the WiiWare version isn’t released yet. Weren’t they originally aiming for a holiday 2008 release? What about those posts denying the release date was pushed back to September 30th, 2009? It doesn’t seem implausible anymore. In fact, we’ll be lucky to see a release that soon, given how unwilling people are to give hard release dates or information about new content.

Cave Story is a great game, but if I’m going to purchase the WiiWare edition, there needs to be a reason to choose it over the PC version! So far none of the new content (short of graphics and music, which are nice but not really that interesting to me) has been revealed in screenshot, video, or even text form. It’s either not ready (a hole in the “it’s done” theory) or it doesn’t exist. All the bonus content is still secret, giving us very little to look forward to.

I’m a fan of Cave Story. But I’m disappointed the WiiWare release has taken this long, and I’m doubtful it will be released soon or with enough content to make it worth purchasing. I certainly hope Nicalis will prove me wrong by at least posting a teaser showcasing some of the new or downloadable content. They need to give people a good reason to want to buy this game.

    Total agreement with Deceased Crab
I’m into this game so much that I’ve drawn fanart, forced tons of people to play it, and even forced myself through a minimal items;3HP run of the entire game (minus sacred grounds)

I’m a huge fan of this game. But the utter lack of any real Visible progress or content from the wiiware version is outright sickening. I know it’s not a ‘copy paste’ job, but a year is way longer than it should take to up-res and compose some off-feeling music for a game which is not that complicated, when it comes down to it.

The fans don’t want to lap up tiny scraps, put together an actual teaser trailer, showcasing the game in some kind of interesting light. This isn’t like The Behemoth’s Alien hominid or even N+ on XBLA. This is simply a reskinning of an existing title onto another platform.

Please be more forthcoming, or we’re not buying.

or -: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  48. tyrone Says:

I’m not really sure how much more forthcoming you want us to be; I don’t know many other companies or developers that have a blog where you can track the progress of their games.

We’re trying our best and we’re not going to rush it out for the sake of slapping it together and calling it a day. We have once chance to get it right so it’ll be out when it’s ready. Anyone disagree?

Also, the game was announced in October, so it’s pretty far off from being a year.

  49. FairyBoy Says:

Ty, I think you should seriously consider renaming Bushlands to Grasstown for the reason that if a new Cave Storian gets stuck in Grasstown and looks up a guide for Bushlands, he won’t get anything. All of the Cave Story Walkthroughs say Grasstown. Plus Grasstown sounds much better. As for the video: The EXP sound is too loud, I can’t even hear Quote shooting or jumping/landing. I also wish you guys would lay off of Ty. He’s working his butt off for us all. I don’t know about you guys, I’d still buy the game if it wasn’t much of an improvement. 51. anguule Says:

I really am surprised that anyone could be criticizing the work that’s being put into this hugely respectful remake of a very deserving game. It’s not our right to judge how they’re handling things, even though they are doing an incredible job at it. We’re all being given this amazing chance to talk directly with the developers of the remake on this blog. They are in no way required to have set this up and keep us up to date with very common updates, but that’s exactly what they did. They’re giving us this great chance to talk with them and peek in on the development first-hand, and some of us are just throwing it in their faces. I for one think that we should be grateful that we got people who care so much about Amaya’s work. What if Cave Story was picked up by some nobodies who didn’t really care about doing a perfect job and released the game in December ‘08? Maybe they ported it over with no bugs or mistakes, just the same game put on WiiWare, not even giving us these “tiny scraps”. A lot of us would still be glad for Pixel, and happy that the game got the chance to go retail. But Nicalis took that many steps further! They’re asking Pixel to redraw all the art, they’re remaking the music, adding in DLC options and additional content, keeping us all up to date, informed, and entertained on this blog, all because they want to. I feel ashamed to call myself a fellow fan to anyone who thinks there’s any sense in criticizing what Nicalis is doing. I think this is an amazing opportunity for all of us, Pixel and Nicalis included.

Cave Story being ported directly to WiiWare is good enough reason for me to buy it. The fact that the entire game is being given a facelift with new content as well as having this blog available to us is an insane amount of effort topped with whipped cream.

..I don’t want to come off as yelling at people who are criticizing, I just firmly believe it’s wrong to not put our trust in the great amount of work that our fine friends are putting into this game. I, and I’m sure there are others, beg you to continue with the little teasers here and there, the progress reports and the entertaining off-topic posts. Cave Story on WiiWare will be done when it is perfect, of that I have no doubt.

@DeceasedCrab: “Cave Story is a great game, but if I’m going to purchase the WiiWare edition, there needs to be a reason to choose it over the PC version!” The reason to buy this game, plain and simple, is to support Pixel, and not only Pixel, but Nicalis as well. Nicalis is bringing us Night Game, too, you know. If we support Nicalis enough, they’ll give us even more great games in the future. Even if it WERE a “bare bones port” or something, it’s still a great way to spread the word about this game, and it’s a step forward for the indie gaming community in general. Look at the bigger picture here, honestly.

I’ve never seen this level of response from the developers of a game, especially in the comments section of a post on a developer blog. It’s rare enough to get a developer blogging about the game’s progress let alone the developers responding to comments for all to see.

I really hope that NICALIS becomes a name that everyone in the game industry knows. You guys are very open and friendly. I honestly had little interest in Night Game, but I just might buy it now due to the amazing dedication you guys have. I’ll definitely be buying Cave Story when it released after E3, but Night Game is now on my “Maybe” list. :P

To reply a bit… there’s only two *inhabitants* in what was previously called Grasstown. And Cave Story’s not an RPG, so why wanting to have so many towns in it?

BTW, I read in a gaming magazine that WiiWare games have to sell a certain amount of copies before the developers get paid… I do worry for your sake, Nicalis team, even though it’s none of my concern.

Also, have anybody tougth about the possibility of people looking for *WII* Cave Story walktroughs instead of PC ones? That feels more probable.

  55. justbanter Says:

Wow, could some of you people be anymore spoiled?

The developers aren’t here to serve your every whim. If they had to insert every tiny little detail that you find isn’t true to the pc version, this thing would likely never be released. Besides, Pixel himself is approving all of these changes, including the naming conventions I’m assuming. And OBVIOUSLY you are all interested in the wiiware release enough to be posting on the developer’s blog; it’s so unnecessary for you to be reaching for more information on added content.

A suggestion Ty: maybe for the next game, don’t even mention a release date or a release ’soon’ until you are 100% positive of a specific date. Might save you guys some grief.

or -: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  56. Revenile Says:

I need to make a few comments.

First to those going “we won’t buy this game cause it’s taking too long.” You are not true Cave Story fans. We have here a small team (SMALL) moving a game over to Wii from PC, that means they have to redo the code so the engine runs natively on the Wii, they have to test everything to make sure for example if you land on platform 432 that you won’t either fall through, or won’t step once then fall through, they have to make sure all the guns act appropiately. Bugs happen in games when being made or even ported, and bugs can appear after a bug is fixed. They want the game perfect, and while I was a tad angry that it was delayed until “after e3,” I trust that they did it so they could get the game released as a perfect product.

Remember a lot of the truly great games get delayed. Half-life 2 was delayed well over a year, Twilight Princes was a year, the PC versions of Bionic Commando, RE5 and Street Fighter 4 won’t be coming out until mid-june and beyond.

Delays happen for various reasons, mainly when something with the game doesn’t feel right and the team needs more time to finish it. The Conduit for Wii was also delayed a couple times. Just be patient, the game will be released and when it is out it will feel like a native console retro game, and it will be awesome.

I know for a fact they’ve been working on this since at least Mid-July of last year, I knew this game was coming a little sooner than most.
Accessibility to developers actually makes you more responsible for producing results, rather than less. You can’t tease the players frequently with video after video and have nothing new to show for it as far as playability goes.
If the game had been released in April or earlier, then yes, I confess I would’ve bought the game on release day, grinning stupidly the whole time, for no reason other than to support Pixel and Nifflas. But delays like this cause people to lose faith. Now, some people are going to expect more from the release rather than just a straight up port, especially with how long it’s taken to get the music in the videos to an even passingly good state.
Lots of good games had delays. Unfortunately, lots of bad games have also had delays. Spore, anyone? A big disappointment. Cliff Johnson’s “The Fool And His Money” still isn’t even out yet, but the 4-year-late demo isn’t what I’d call good. Duke Nukem Forever was also supposed to be out when it was ready, but I’m pretty sure that one isn’t coming out anymore.
Similarly styled Wii-ware releases of New games came out roughly 3 months after being announced. It’s been 8 months since the official announcement, of a port, of a game finished 4 years ago.
The longer it takes to come out, the more people will expect. The clock is ticking. Prove those of us who’ve lost faith in this project wrong, by releasing the game, soon, with new content.

I don’t understand you, DeceasedCrab. Why are you complaining about getting video after video? The rest of us are taking the opportunity to see how the game is turning out, in regards to the art and music. Also, there’s no reason to compare its delays with any other game’s delays. Like you said, both good games and bad games have been delayed, so it’s irrelevant. I’d rather they take more time to work on it than release it earlier. For me, it doesn’t matter how long it takes; I’m not going anywhere soon, I’ll be ready for it when it’s done.

As far as I can recall, there wasn’t any video that didn’t showcase anything new versus the PC Version. It either had new graphics, music, or something to show for it.

In case you have been living in a damn cave up until now, this isn’t a port at all. If it was, you’d be paying ~$10 for exactly the game you could be downloading to your PC for free. But, oh, NEWS FLASH! It’s taking longer because (among other reasons, see below) they are actually putting effort into this!

Delays? Are you kidding me? Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 both had serious delays with little to no video showing updates. This blog had more videos than either of those games did. (The videos for these show off different kinds of content, if you look closely. If you were an ignorant spoiled little posh kid you’d say Nicalis was different in this regard) But look at how these two games turned out.

The Super Smash Bros. Brawl blog was good, but you *can* have too much of a good thing. That blog was updated too often. When I got the game, I wished that most of what I had seen on the blog was kept secret until the game came out, that way I could see everything new myself. Nicalis seems to be going this route, and I applaud each and every one of them.

As far as the video itself is concerned: Did you even bother to read comment #37 by tiffany? “I think what you are hearing is just the audio volume being clipped due to the video encoder”. She did say that the volume/sound is being worked on, and that it was confirmed by Tyrone in comment #46.

All of these WiiWare games (save for World of Gooand maybe a couple of others) were directly created for WiiWare. They weren’t ports, they were *new games*. World of Goo was a port. Nothing was really added to the game.

When you are developing a game with a close relationship with the author of a game with such a large fanbase (among other things) you have to stay true when you are making additions and changes. Because of this, it takes time. It has to be on par with the guy that started it all. Sure, adding new features takes time, but that’s not the only reason for delays: This is a smaller studio in an economy that is simply unforgiving. Everything has to go through Daisuke. Daisuke lives in Japan, while Nicalis is headquartered in the states. The team is small, but also working on other games.

And its true. If you had any sense of loyalty to Amaya-san and this team of developers, you’d be there until the end. Instead, you’re kicking and screaming and drooling on your bib throwing these stupid little temper tantrums that things aren’t going your way and the game isn’t being released as soon as you wanted it to be.

As far as the area known as “Grasstown”… Aeon Genesis was the one who translated the PC version into english. Not Amaya-san. If Amaya-san wants it to be called Bushlands, so be it. It’s his game. He has never steered us wrong, right? :P

I don’t know why you’re all ganging up on Deceased Crab for. Did you even read his post? I didn’t detect a shred of hostility in it, yet you all seem pretty eager to brandish the figurative torches and pitchforks at him.

He’s just one guy on the internet expressing his own opinions. What, is everyone here suddenly a member of the Nicalis defense force? Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is you.

Not everyone can be as blindly faithful, or as loyal as you can.

And apparently, not everyone can be as arrogant and conceited as you can either.

This is a devblog. By definition, this is where developmental information regarding the game is posted on regular intervals.

Not music videos or Europe. Not pseudo posts about things which otherwise have nothing to do with the state of the game. It is a devblog, not a personal blog (though I suppose it’s an easy misunderstand as they both have the word “blog” in it).

Furthermore, there has not been just one delay. There has been multiple. And Deceased Crab is perfectly right on this one; there comes to a certain point when it’s not just an excusable accident anymore… it’s testing the loyalty of those which anticipate the release of the game (I’m hesitant to use the word “fan” here, as you have demonstrated there is a significant amount of difference in the people who simply want to play the game, and true “fans” such as yourself). It’s not about “having faith”, or anything of that caliber. The second coming of Jesus Christ requires faith. A port of a game is expected to be released when the developers, in testing the patience and trust of the audience, promise it will be released.

There is a certain set of responsibilities that comes with every task. A game developer is certainly no exempt from this. When a deadline is implied, there will be people who will expect it to be kept. And a certain level of disappointment will natural follow suit when it turns out “whoops, we couldn’t make it in time!”

A person can only take so many tomatoes to the face before saying “screw this.”

You can’t blame people for having lost a level of “faith”, or even interest in this project. We don’t care if you’ll take a bullet for Tyrone or Daisuke. The world, and even more so, the Internet, is not all about you. There are people who are not as adamant, or as stoic, or as faithfully rigid as you are.

And rather than jumping on a high horse (or the bandwagon), and unleashing a volcanic hail of verbal weaponry at them, simply accept it.

As far as I can recall, this comment section is an open one. Meaning people are free to post their criticisms, whether it is nice, or not so nice.

    Oh, and KP9000? About this:

I don’t recall anyone throwing a tantrum, kicking and screaming or otherwise. As far as I could tell, Deceased Crab was articulated his post with composure and professionalism. Hyperboles are meant for clever banter, and are not so effective when you’re seriously contradicting someone else. It’ll only render you a bigoted and egotistical fool, far more juvenile than a bawling infant.

Also I was just poking fun :) Some folks here seem to be taking this extremely seriously. Allow me to put this into context: I did all the environment art in this entire game for about $5/hr, maybe a little less. That’s how seriously I take Cave Story. And some of the guys here are taking it WAY TOO SERIOUSLY.

Sometimes, you don’t get things right when you want them. Sometimes games take longer to port than is ideal. But let’s be realistic about this! Here are your options (I am not doing this to be pedantic or condescending, I am hoping to amend for my previous posts with a little logic):

1 – Rush the game out before its done
    2 – Do it right

I don’t think anybody here wants to see #1 happen. That should be a safe assumption :) So what does #2 entail?

1 – Porting all of the code (getting both the original res and the new high res versions working in both standard and hi def, porting the old sound engine, building a new sound engine)
2 – Making constant appearances at all Nintendo promo events
3 – Flying to Japan repeatedly to make sure that Amaya-san is 100% on board with every decision made
4 – Getting all of the high res art and new music completed and in-game
5 – Prepping for fan-demanded DLC (download and update systems, etc)
6 – Most importantly, passing all of the insanely strict Nintendo Lot Checks and QA
7 – Retranslating the entire game to be as authentic as possible

The lot checks and QA on their own can easily chew up 3 months of development, ask anyone (including 2DBoy!). NOW, also keep in mind that this small developer is also finishing up Nifflas’s brand new, IGF-nominated masterpiece Night Game, and going through all the same hoops (though without nearly so much pressure from justifiably rabid fans).

Now, given that the game is NOT out yet (you may feel that it should be done already, still, and that’s ok – it doesn’t change this part), here are your options:

1 – Get nothing and hear nothing until the game drops
2 – Get to see gameplay videos from each section as they’re finalized, stay in the loop, provide feedback, etc

I think if people really had to choose, they would probably opt to get to see some bits and pieces of the thing as the release date approaches.

If you are NOT one of those people, I feel pretty safe saying that stuff like this:

“Prove those of us who’ve lost faith in this project wrong, by releasing the game, soon, with new content.”

    Is absolutely ridiculous. Grow up!

  70. Adam Aubin Says:

I cannot believe how much whining and complaining there is on this board…
Not to mention how much criticism there is to what is still a work in progress.

I guess it’s good to hear people comment on things like EXP pings, and shooting noises and all that stuff. It’s all handy feedback, but from what I know I have nothing to be worried about, Nicalis and Pixel are being extremely flexible in terms of choices they are giving players…

Like for example that you can choose between new music and sounds, and new graphics as separate entities. My guess is there’s even an Options setting tab now where you can adjust volumes for sound effects and music in general. It would also explain how in different videos certain things are more audible, as when they are playing and creating the videos they may have their own personal preferences on.

Also I’m really shocked by the snub-like comments by Deceased Crab and InsomniacOvrLrd …. saying that something like a delay is reason enough to not support the game on WiiWare. For starters considering that people didn’t have to pay a dime for the PC game how much more content is needed for it to be worth $10(assuming they sell it for 1000 points like Mega Man 9 or something) ??? I think some people will never be satisfied when they were given probably the coolest gift of a life time.

I’m very content to play the original while I wait, and I love the game so much I’ll pay $10 or $20 just to get the option of playing it again even with updated graphics. The fact that it’s already more then the original was, that’s reason enough to buy it. I have no doubt personally that there will be more content in the game and more secrets to unearth considering that Cave Story is amazing for that complexity.

I know that this will take time to do properly, and it will be worth it. There’s lots of stuff I trust they are working on, and it’s more then a port. If they were simply porting it they would’ve said that, but in reality they are coding new stuff, everything is a redo … all environments, tiles, characters, animations, not to mention redoing sounds and music.

I’m just sympathizing with how it must be frustrating for the team to have to deal with having to please each and every fan of the game, and even worse when you have those claiming they are losing faith over what are really trivial things.

The blog is just to let people know what’s going on and to give a taste of what to expect. Comment on the video itself and what your seeing. Personally I liked the new version of the song.

Out of personal opinion I don’t want the music to sound exactly like the original… so I’m happy when I hear the music kind of have a different take on the original song. Yet it keeps that Cave Story charm by keeping it all synthetic and computer like sounding.

The animations and everything look fluid, I love the new icons and health bars and everything. I’m really pleased and I can’t wait to see the full version… everything in it’s final form. I’ll be getting this day one, and I’m still holding out for the possibility of a May release…

So yeah Nicalis, my birthday is next weekend, so maybe it would be awesome to see this in the WiiWare shop this monday or the following. Yet at the same time take all the time you need to finish it! Can’t wait to play it!

“Accessibility to developers actually makes you more responsible for producing results, rather than less. You can’t tease the players frequently with video after video and have nothing new to show for it as far as playability goes.”

WHOA there, sense of entitlement. Nicalis is going out of their way to make themselves accessible for direct feedback from the internet at large, but that in no way makes them responsible for catering to your wants and needs. It’s their blog, they can do what they like here. We can whine and moan all we want for more info (we are the internet, after all, it’s what we do), but it doesn’t make them responsible for providing us anything. This reminds me of an article I just read on Niel Gaiman’s blog on the relationship between authors and their readers. For the most part, the same can be said of the relationship between game developers and those who play their games.

    http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2009/05/entitlement-issues.html

Please everyone, cool down, and let Nicalis worry about the game instead of these comments. If you have feedback on the content that they post, I’m all for you giving it, good or bad, but give a rest to the flaming and grieving. You’re entitled to your opinion, but keep in mind, Nicalis is made up of a bunch of caring people, not machines. Could you actually say this stuff to their faces? Think about that before you submit your flippant comments.

Wow another smart one, happy to see that. It’s true, though about fans and that feeling of entitlement. It’s actually a privilege for the most part we are getting to see the development process and such. Not a tease… if they wanted they could just leave all the fans in the dark and not breath a word or show anything.

There’s a lot of developers out there who don’t for the very reason that they will have to deal with all the internetz input and feedback… and they know that the internetz is very indecisive and doesn’t generally agree, but just likes to have a voice.

I was thinking of saying more then this, but you really did sum it up so nicely Starman.

However, I LOVE the Sand Zone remix. First half of the vid sounds cool and mysterious, and the remaining fourths sound like Kirby, followed by pretty much the same-ish ending from the original.
Graphics look good, but not as amazing as the remix. Wow!
Anyways, to contribute to the flame wars going on in this post, Just gotta say that it is *kinda* taking a while to finish the game. Should have been out already, if not in within the last week or so. However, I believe that the devs. are having a tough time with working on two games at the same time etc.; I don’t want it to be rushed.
I’m a little upset by the time it’s taking, but from what I saw of this video (which looks and sounds stunning, I must say!), I’ll definitely be downloading this when it’s released. I’ve saved 1000 points on my Wii since Christmas waiting for this game…. :(

Sure, I wanted Cave Story last week, the week before and the week before that, etc. However, I do recognize their need for time. Unexepected things can occur, especially during testing, when they’re actively seeking out those unexpecting things. Plus they got to make a lot of fine tunings so it works just right.

I feel bad for all the people at Nicalis who have to read such mean spirited comments.

I think DC has a point. I plan on buying the game; it looks nice, I loved Cave Story, and I can’t wait to play it. However, I think it’s a bit irritating that there’s no new content. While it’s great to have the updated everything, why not updated gameplay? Without any new substantial content, there’s no real reason to pay $10 for graphics and sound when you can get the same gameplay on the PC. (DarWiinRemote means you can technically play it on a Mac with a remote, too…) Making the “to support Pixel” argument isn’t really viable because I might not want to support Pixel.

…I mean, obviously that would be just stupid, but still. Remaking a game with no new content is a little silly. I just hope there’s something the haven’t told us about.

Will the graphics and sound be interchangable? Can I play with new graphics and the old music? I love the graphics but I’m a bit iffy on the new music.

You can play with the new art and old music, new art and new music, old art and old music, or old art and new music. Also, it has long been stated that the remake will have new content. If I recall correctly, there is both new content in the game itself and in the form of updates/DLC. I think /that/, on top of the brand new art and music, is more than enough to make buying the remake worth it.

  111. Cub Says:

Hello! Longtime lurker, first time commenting… in fact, I made an account just to comment on this blog! First, a little bit about myself, and how I learned about cave story. In fact, it was thanks to the article that Nintendo Power did recently. After reading it, I looked up the game, and finding that there was a Linux version, downloaded it immediately. I have not regretted it. I think that cave story is one of the most awesome side scrolling games ever made, commercial or otherwise. There are only two things I think could make it any better: first, A change in one certain part of the story, and second, bigger! It’s so good, that I just want to play more of it! The Wii version should help with at least one of those things. Anyway, now to comment on the video…

First of all, I’d like to state that while I may be mostly alone in this, I really enjoyed the Gra- ahem. The “Bushlands” music. And I also liked the start of the music in this video, up to the instrument change. It may be just me, but I think it sounds a little bit too “happy” for sand zone. Then again, this has always been my least favorite level due to a certain unchangeable event, so I’m not one to judge.

I think you guys are doing a wonderful job on the updated graphics! The only thing I think could be better is the health bar, but that may be because the video seems to anything red look worse… “Mister Traveler”, however, looks awesome!

I do dislike the “ting!” sound of the exp. Did they do that in the game? I would thing I’d remember something annoying like that… Perhaps the video makes it loud, but in the game, I never even noticed it, and I wouldn’t be too displeased if it went away altogether.

I think the gun sounds are just right now, but I have a suggestion that would fix these SFX/Music problems for good: why not just but an option for “sound”, where the player could use sliders to increase/decrease the level of certain sound effects and the music? Just an idea, anyway.

I’m really looking forward to this game, and I’d like to thank team Nicalis for keeping us fans informed on the game like they have! Thanks!

Yes in the pc version the EXP tokens do make that “ping” sound when they bounce on the ground, and it really helps in gameplay cause in some of the more hectic areas you rely on that sound to know to look for the tokens and not the enemies if you need a lvl up on a weapon.

Is this whole debate/discussion still going on??

Just thought I’d make a point of mentioning that the game probably keeps getting delayed or post poned cause they are trying to make everyone happy. So every time they take a step forward they have to take two steps back because some fan has to complain about some aspect.

Someone mentioned that they haven’t made the new version look that different from the old… yet at the same time if they were too change it too much someone would get upset… look at happens when people start hearing the new songs… a lot of people complain it’s not like the original… or something along those lines.

Lets face it the real reason there are probably delays is cause people keep complaining about this and that … so they try to go back and teak every little thing and make everyone happy. Then at the same time they can’t win cause someone is gonna complain it’s taking too long. Anyhow… this needs to end, I love getting updates, it’s just sad to see so many who hate on the project.

Aside from that, I recently discovered the music player program on Studio Pixel’s site. I love the Cave Story Beta music, my favourite being the track that evolved into “Meltdown 2″. Am I wrong calling that one “Meltdown”?

    The link there was http://homepage2.nifty.com/rochet/binaries/dou_bgm_old.zip
…I think you guys should download & run it and listen. The first five tracks are earlier versions of music that shows up in Doukutsu Monogatari, (Cave Story, Safety, Gestation, Gravity, Waterway) then comes three unknown ones, Meltdown 1, Moonsong, Oppression, another new one, Geothermal, White, and finally another unknown song.

Anyway, sounding wonderful, all of them. Pixel even rivals Koji Kondo. ^_^

I keep on going back to the two videos posted here in the website, hooked in the music.

I have deep faith, appreciation and awe to the amount of work being put into refurbishing this game for the Wii. The notion of a graphical, musical, and mechanic update wasn’t necessary, but Nicalis and Amaya-san have delved into their work with passion, excitement, and dedication, which is easily shown through the videos above.

To those of you who complain about the technicalities: They’re the ones in charge, not you. You’re the customer, yes, but robbing them of their hard work with mere complaints than actual suggestions about translations, or how the music sounds are only opinions that don’t and may not even be taken into consideration, because fact of that matter, they have better to do with their time than to cater the unsatisfiable.

In contrast, those that encourage with positive comments and pinpointing slight tweaks should take note that your suggestions will not go unnoticed, but these guys are professionals, and I bet they have done lots experimenting with sound and music volume ratios, so if they don’t follow the advice, let’s keep on encouraging their fantastic job.

As for the music, it’s phenomenally well-done. Through my point of view, it steps above the original because it takes the core melodies, and adds depth to it with added compositions that enhance the songs rather than overpowering it and stripping it from it’s autocthanous charm. But hey, if that doesn’t roll, I think they said that you guys can revert back to the original soundtrack and music.

So what’s to complain about? Why not be jubilant, anxious, and excited to see this game appear in Wii Ware? They’re doing a hell of a job it making it the best that it can be, and I, for one, support their decisions as a team, bearing faith that it’ll be one hell of a show upon release.

    I have faith in them.

If it sounds like an ol SNES though, it’ll be just as good.

I’m most happy with the improved graphics. Doubling and refining graphics like that doesn’t happen often as its alot of work and the details show here.

I have 2200 Wii points just waiting for this game alone. I refuse to buy anything else till the game is out.
Though the main reason I wanna buy it is because I think the original was worth my money. The updates and extras are just well, extras.
I can all ready program my wiimotes and all to play the game anyway though I hope the controls will be flexable and programable. I wanna use my Wii Hori Arcade stick too, or classic controller, some mapping.

I really hope for a release this month but I’ll be patient. Not much good on wiiware anyway besides a few gems like this.
If not released this month I guess I’ll just have to make my own game, or get another job, or something completely out of context and illrelevent.
I do wonder how Cave Story would be if it were a classic arcade game. But thats just more random pondering.

I guess music wise I’d only be disapointed if theres no sound test after you beat the game. Though I’d just find a way to get it some other way.

    {Proof’s in the dozen of arguments that cropped up here, and I’m not just talkin’ about the rules. Alot of these people wouldn’t have had started these pointless arguments if they had just read a bit.}

    Anyways, back to the video:
I noticed the player lacked the Machine Gun
    Woo, ^.^

    It’s why I didn’t specifically say how many points I have. :D

    No one reads anything, anymore….

A sad but true fact, in which we are all guilty. After a while, I started to gloss over the more flamey posts myself.

I can’t tell if you did that random and ill-placed comment on purpose or not….

This is a comment page for the SAND ZONE VIDEO…
    Can we keep it that way…? {Probably not >.>}
    {Yeah, I know I’m adding to the off-topic-ness, but I’m also trying to prevent it…}
    {And don’t take this the wrong way, not trying to be the enforcer, just trying to prevent more arguments, flame wars, and put-downs on a COMMENT’S page…}

  153. shadow1w2 Says:

Ok then, why dont you talk about Sand Zone then?
    Instead of complaining about it.

Its a short clip showing off the Sand Zone in the higher detailed mode.
The music needs a little more work but is sounding rather good.
    The gameplay is completely intact.

Its looking good. (It’ll no doubt look better on a real screen.)
What else is there to say?
P.S. There is the fire shot weapon icon that looks round instead of square like the shot does, but that doesn’t really matter.

    Keep up the good work.

That’s because, if you had bothered to read the other comments, {Which, apparently you didn’t.} I’ve already commented on it as much as possible.
As much as a 12 second video can be commented on, anyways.

  155. BoltMan Says:

I have a question of curiosity: Why did you decide to go back to more pixelated text in the HUD, rather than the higer-res smoothed-out stuff we saw much earlier? Either way is cool with me — I’m just being nosey!

  159. VoidMage_Lowell Says:

Now you’re confusing asshole-ness with anger.
I wouldn’t really act this way if people would stop whining about the release date and stop using the comments page for arguments and such, which we’re doing now…
    ..So we should probably stop…
