And Hello Again! MTV Digs Cave Story
Jan 09

With the second week of the new year almost over, we’re back to our schedule–including trying to update the blog. It’s technically Friday and that means it’s time for a new character. Since we were quiet over the holiday it’s time for a good one.

What you’re seeing above is pretty obvious, Amaya-san’s original and new take on Curly. I probably haven’t said it enough, but Amaya-san has done an amazing job. He’s consistently provided character artwork that seems to get better and better.

Let’s show him what you think with the comments below!

    Always smiling there, Curly?

Still have to get used to their now thicker arms (both Curly’s and the hero’s), but other than that, awesome job, Pixel!

Oh, and nice new theme, Tyrone! Mixing both Cave Story and Night Game. Not a bad idea…

After I resized her new pic, it’s definitely the arms that make her look like that. (she’s not fat, Madake)
Anyway, I’m loving the detail Amaya-san put into her new look :D

The first thing I noticed was the new theme as well, looks pretty cool Tyrone.

    Yea, she looks great. :)
As for the downloadable content…I am intrigued. I would love to see some extra levels/challenges, or even more storyline!

Maybe an alternate version of the game where we play as Curly, perhaps?

tyrone, do yourself a favor and include nearest neighbor mipmaps of the image. i often think that the characters look fishy but after resizing to the actual size, it looks normal and muuuuuuch better than the enlarged pic on the site. and yeah, she sure looks fat at this size, but after resizing its normal and doesnt have the fat touch to it^^

also i noticed pixel used different colors on the new curly – i thought he would stick the the old palettes… following colors changed:
her trousers(violet) is now darker and less colorful
the shadows(light blue) on her skin isnt as blue as its used to be.

    3 or 4 pixels changed.
if it is the arm thats making it like that, then i apologize.

Curly can be fat if she wants to be. I’m sure it’s very stressful looking after 4 kids/rabbit thingies and a roaming puppy. Not to mention having to crawl up into the ceiling and behind a wall to get your underwear. Besides, nobody’ll notice during gameplay, and Pixel himself OK’d it.

  13. ShwahnStuff Says:

I’m certain it’s just her arms. She looks a lot more alive now! As alive as a robot can be, anyway. Although, if there’s gonna be any minor sprite changes due to fan requests/persistence, I really think it should be making Quote’s scarf actually BE around his neck… Unless, y’know, it’s not a scarf, or something.

By the way, awesome job with everything, so far! (And not just the Cave Story stuff!)

  15. Christoph Says:

I think she looks great. Not all female characters need a large chest and thin waist. Robots don’t need to look sexy, just functional.

    Can’t wait for the release.

  17. oniplayer Says:

I just checked in MSpaint, if you were to remove that yellow eyebrow from the new sprite it looks many times better. The position of it is wierd and frankly, she looks like an old person with it because it’s not prominent in the first place.

  18. oniplayer Says:

Forgot to type this. If you do remove the eyebrow you just have to remove a block or 2 of hair off the right side of her face.

  19. HMC Says:

She’s not chubby, guys. You’re just getting confused because of the positioning of her arm.

  20. partymetroid Says:

If those white pixel is indeed apart of her stomach, it would be inaccurate of the original character artwork. I believe, however, HMC when he says that those white pixels are indeed apart of her arm. Being able to create the sprite artwork knowing that it may make her look “chubby” is very bold of Pixel. He’s a great artist. :)

  23. BPM Says:

It’s by no means BAD, and I’ve really liked the new sprites so far, but Curly’s new sprite kinda throws me off for some reason.

Yes, she looks “fat”… Is it her arm? If so, perhaps some shading should be used on her right arm (when she faces left) to help differentiate it from her torso? And maybe some shading on her back to help seperate it from her left arm (when facing left)?

Keep up the good work, guys.

  24. mustardman Says:

    ahh, she looks gorgeous.

If that is her arm, kudos to Pixel for being so ballsy with his pixel art, and if she has some chub, kudos to pixel for breaking the Laura Croft mold. :D

  25. sfried Says:

Perhaps the somewhat chubby appearance is a nod to Roll from the Rock/Mega Man games?

  26. madake Says:

well in Pixel’s bonus pixel art slides, he has a couple with curly, and she was never fat there.
in short, the rest of Pixel’s official art does not depict her this way.
i think theres just some positioning mistake or something.

  27. partymetroid Says:

I think the pants here indicate the belly line. But she’s not fat. Just big-boned…

or -: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  28. ShwahnStuff Says:

To all who think she looks chubby: re-size the pic. Seriously, when I just saw it from farther away, I thought “wow, did they give in and change it?” but it’s still the same.

    She looks fine.

  29. Droqen Says:

    ShwahnStuff, I think you’re right.

Pixel art doesn’t need to look good when you zoom right up in its face (not that this doesn’t still look awesome); zoom out to about 1/8x (12.5x) and yes she looks just great.

    Zoom out. That’s how you’ll see it in-game :)
