TGS Day 2 Over, Time for Dinner Saturday in Shinjuku
Oct 10

Since last week I’ve received a few questions in-person and via e-mail about the upscaled Wii-exclusive artwork. It’s been a mixed reaction of “great,” “good,” and “meh” from editors and fans alike. As some fans may or may not know we are implementing a switch for both the graphics and audio.

However, we want to show you a side-by-side comparison of what the original artwork looks like in contrast to the new pixel work done by Pixel. I probably don’t have to say much, but the image above has the idle frame for Toroko from both the original Cave Story (left) and the upcoming WiiWare version (right). The image has been enlarged 800-percent but the pixel-ratio is still exactly what you’ll see on-screen. So which do you like better?

I personally, being a fan of the original, prefer the original graphics. However, I’m not going to be the type of fan that resents any form of change. The new graphics look good, still, of course.

The ability to switch graphics/audio on the Wiiware version of the game amazes me and will make for practically two-experiences-in-one.

You’ve done it again, Pixel! Minor quips about the new one, but overall very satisfied!
I noticed that the new Toroko sprite’s head is slightly taller and slimmer than the old sprite. Also a weird thing to me was the mouth (:3; gah, dumb forums). Maybe that’s because only TWO Mimigas visibly showed the mouth (Toroko’s “normal” picture, and Mahin’s sprite)
Keep up the good work, Pixel and Tyrone! Oh, and whenever you have time, please tell us Pixel’s reaction towards the new build!

I’m not sure which I prefer, but it does look good. :) It’s still some class A sprite work.

    ah.
    that’s a nice change. :D
well normally I’d say original is best but the Wiiware version preserved the “retro” feel from the last.

The new pixel art from Mr. Amaya looks wonderful. I definately have no qualms about the fidelity of it on new TV screens.

I hope the remade music is coming along quite well as many people are anxious about Yann van der Cruyssen’s take. That said, if he is aiming for 16-bit era midi, at least make it sound like it was coming out of a Roland MT-32 synthesizer or something.

Wow, looks GREAT. For the ‘new’ graphics, I still think the transition between screens should be changed. White is too bright. Black is good.

I really like the new ones! It provides more detail for the characters while still retaining the old school-style of graphics.

I tend to prefer the original simplified design of most of the Cave Story characters as it allows the player to have more imagination as to the overall design of the character. The other one defines the character with more detail and while it’s also a nice design, it’s that very definition that will more than likely hit and miss with CS fans who already played the original.

Still, the fact that you all are implementing a switch to use either the new or old graphics will appease most fans I imagine. : )

To be honest, I’m not sure about the eyes of the new look. I keep trying to look at it from further away to see it “on the screen”, but somehow the eyes don’t make sense to me. Is it supposed to be reflection?

Everything else looks fantastic of course.

I prefer the new one for offering more detail. Though I have to say, I’m really glad you’re offering the option to switch. I’m sure I will enjoy playing the game with “classic” art after my first play-through with the new.

I rather like it, but for some reason it feels like Toroko’s face is scrunching inwards awkwardly. It’s probably just my personal… weirdness, though.

I’m eager to see what Pixel can do with the four times the pixels to work with, though.

  17. ZarroTsu Says:

The ‘new’ Toroko’s left (Toroko’s left, not yours) ear in the above sample is lacking some of the shading, and looks as if it were part of her face. Additionally, the curve of the shirt makes her look pudgy.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a “retro” game mode, in which all GFX, music and sounds are directly taken from the original game. In fact, I’m sure a lot of people would recommend it, really…

I’m pretty sure it was stated in an interview that you’ll be able to toggle whether you want the original or new graphics, as well as the music.

Anyway, looks great. It’s a lovely remake that still preserves the beloved original art style.

For all those who don’t like the new Toroko sprite, try looking at it at its REAL resolution, before passing judgment. (I think the resolution is 32×32 pixels) It is MUCH better to see it in that perspective!
You’re probably going to have to take the image and reduce it, or do what I did and re-create the sprite in Paint in a 32×32 box. It’s great fun doing pixel art!

  20. staroc Says:

Overall the new sprite is better, but I have to agree with ManaTree that the new eyes are rather off… I don’t like the way they look neither in the large and especially not when you scale it down to the actual pixel ratio. It makes Toroko look weird somehow. Other than that though the new detail is really appreciated. Keep the good work up PIXEL, but keep the eyes the way they used to be. A quick test with a pixel editor where I simply reverted the new versions eyes to their original state, made for the perfect look in my opinion. Try it out, please :)

After looking at the new Su, I would have to say that the old one looks a bit blob shaped. She still looked great, but its almost as if I can never look at her old form without now comparing it to the new…
