Do you remember our Igor Comparison? If you don’t, go check it out. At the time I didn’t say too much or really show the process in which we arrived on Pixel’s final version of Igor. I wanted to take the time to show you more how a typical character is redone for the Wii version of Cave Story.

From left to right, the first image is an enlarged image of what you originally saw on the PC version. It’s also one of the options you can choose on the Wii version.

The second image to the right is what software interpolation looks like, but this was done by hand. There are technically four-times as many pixels, but the details is lacking and not what we’d want to see in the finished game.

Third from the left is pretty close to the finished product, but not quite. However, compared to the upscaled image you now see some real detail in the face, teeth and anger in his eyes. The tie has been given more attention and isn’t simply a 45-degree group of pixels, it wraps around simulating his wide neck. He’s starting to come together. But it’s not complete…

Fourth and finally is what you’ll see in the Wii version. Pixel added whiskers to Igor, he re-adjusted the eyes to give Igor a sort of feline look. Pixel also added more detail to his brow and also significantly changed his nose. The overall looks is much more consistent with the portrait image. Finally, Igor is complete and ready to take you on in Egg Corridor.

Okay, so you La-Mulana and you should know 1Up.com, but now the latter has chosen the former as one of the Top 10 Wii Games of 2010. That’s awesome

By the way, it’d make NIGORO and me very happy if you visit the La-Mulana Blog. Lemeza would be happy, too.

NIGORO already said, あけましておめでとうございます! and now Naramura has updated the La-Mulana Blog with two new updates.

First, he said Arigatou!–that means thank you in Japanese. It could also mean “the ant is 10″, but that’s mostly a pun. The director of La-Mulana is also apparently a little shocked that it’ 2010 already, Did A New Year Begin?. Well, yes, it did.

Give them your support, these guys don’t take any days off just to give us La-Mulana on Wii!

Happy Christmas!

If you remember yesterday’s Cave Story Happy Christmas Eve update, you’ll recall that we mentioned a third tune by Dustin Kulwicki. As promised, here it is!

And, in case you missed the first two:

You probably know that Japan is roughly 16-hours ahead of the west coast here in the US. It’s already Christmas to our friends at NIGORO. And they’ve updated the La-Mulana Blog with some new info. Be sure to check out Naramura’s post, Christmas Is Coming, give him some feedback and encouragement–the entire NIGORO team is working through the holidays.

I hope they take a break to have some Christmas Kentucky Fried Chicken!

You’ve probably hear Nicklas released Saira on PC. And if you haven’t heard, where have you been? You can go download the Saira Demo. Or get some cool Knytt T-Shirts. But if you just want something pretty for your wallpaper check out the Saira Art Collection done by Charlotte Winroth.

It’s almost Christmas and the end of the year!

We’ve been utterly quiet because updating a blog takes more time away than I’d like from actually making games–what we’re supposed to be doing. We’ll have some updates post-release with Amaya-san discussing the game. For now I want to bring everyone up to speed on the finished product:

- Three save files
- New graphics/music
- Classic Controller support (play this way)
- Original graphics/music
- 60 frames per second vs the PC version’s 50
- Three game modes (easy, normal and hard)

In Easy Mode, Mister Traveler sustains half damage when hit. It’s still a pretty decent challenge. Also, he’ll be in ひよっこ/yellow Mister Traveler attire for Easy–you can probably spot him in the background.

Normal is normal–the same game you’ve come to know and love.

Hard Mode is for all the hardcore fans. You have to make it through most of the game with 3HP and no missiles; Mister Traveler looks very unique in this mode with blonde hair and a blue outfit (he’s on the left side). We were happy to include Hard Mode for release since we originally planned it as…

- DLC, we have a lot planned for this AND we’re taking possible requests

- Translated script with the blessing and support of Amaya-san

- A few changes that we don’t want to spoil, but true fans will notice

I know that some of you might be disappointed that you didn’t get Cave Story in time for Christmas, but it’ll be worth the wait.

For now Dustin Kulwicki, you may know him as k-wik, has done up three AMAZING Christmas-themed Cave Story songs. If his name sounds at all familiar it’s with good reason. He was responsible for the equally amazing Cave Story Remix Project.

These all-new songs may not be the actual game, but think of them as a gift to all the fans who have supported Amaya-san for five years. Listen to each song via the player below or right-click on the name to “save as”. Enjoy!

Oh yeah, you don’t get the last one until Christmas day. Release date for Cave Story? After the new year. Gotta get back to working on La-Mulana and NightSky…
